This morning it opened. This evening, after the ride through standing water, it does nothing. Or it starts, shows a folder or a beach ball, and shuts off when the charger touches it. From the outside that is “the MacBook died in the rain.” On the bench it is usually a specific rail, a port controller, or corrosion in one corner — found by measurement, not by swapping the whole board.
Unplug it and stop waking it. Every extra power attempt on a damp board is a repair you have not approved and may not need.
What to do now
- Disconnect the charger from the Mac and the wall. A spark, a hot connector, or a smell of hot electronics means you stop touching the port.
- Hold the power button only long enough to force a shutdown if the screen is still lit. If it is already dark, do not keep holding it “to reset.”
- Blot, do not open. Bottom-case screws are how people drag water onto the NAND and the battery.
- Count the retries. How many times it was plugged in, whether fans screamed, whether it got hot on one side. That history points at the rail.
What you can learn without another power-on
- Any sign of life at all? A fan twitch, a capslock LED on older models, a MagSafe light, or a trackpad click means some power existed. Write it down. Do not try to reproduce it.
- Where was the water? Ports point at the charging controllers. Keyboard points at the palm-rest connectors and then the board. Hinge and screen point at the display path as well — see blank display and backlight stains.
- Was it an M-series Air or Pro? Apple Silicon has no SMC reset that will dry a board. Startup Options only appear when firmware power is already there. Our M1 no-power guide covers the chip-side pattern.
What the free logic-board diagnosis includes
- Visual corrosion at the ports, connectors, and under the shields.
- Power-rail and short checks so a dead charger is not mistaken for a dead board.
- Whether storage still responds, which decides if data recovery is even possible.
- A quote for clean-up, a charging IC or PMIC, or the honest news if the board cannot be saved.
Completed board repairs carry a 90-day warranty. The warranty starts when you approve and we finish — not when you walk in for the check. Component-level repair is the path we quote when it costs less than a full board and the storage can stay on the original board.
What not to do tonight
- Do not leave it plugged in overnight “in case it comes back.”
- Do not try DFU or a revive on a Mac that shows no USB life and was wet today. Firmware tools need a board that can already take power.
- Do not bake the logic board, and do not believe a shop that offers that as drying.
- Do not buy a donor board from a listing before the diagnosis. Many rain jobs never need one.
The keyboard still types but power is flaky: keyboard and trackpad after rain. The whole bag was wet and the Mac still opens: MacBook liquid damage the same day is the better first read, because a working machine is when clean-up still wins.
Bring it in. Diagnosis is free.
The checks above tell you which fault you are probably holding. They do not open the machine, clean under the shields, or price the repair. That happens on the bench at iQube Tech Care, Mount Road.
Diagnosis is free. We tell you what failed and what the repair costs. Repair starts only after you approve the quote. If you say no, you take the device back unrepaired. Nothing is soldered, erased, or swapped before that yes.
Walk in all 7 days, 11am–10pm, at F9/F10, 1st floor, Anjuman Shopping Arcade, Anna Salai. Or Book a free logic-board diagnosis. Service page: MacBook logic board repair.
Frequently asked questions
The MacBook will not power on after rain. Is the logic board finished?
Not from that symptom alone. A wet port, a shorted power rail, or corrosion under a shield can look identical to a scrap board. Free diagnosis tells you which one you have before anyone quotes a replacement.
I already tried the charger five times. Does that matter?
Yes. Tell us. Each connection on a wet port is another chance to burn the charging path. Stop, and bring it in powered off.
Can an M1 or M2 board be repaired after liquid?
Many charging and power-rail faults can be repaired at chip level. Some storage failures cannot. We say which it is after diagnosis, and we do not start micro-soldering until you approve.
Is data recovery included in the free diagnosis?
The diagnosis is free. If you need files off a Mac that will not boot, recovery is a separate quote and starts only after you approve that quote.
