You dried the MacBook, opened it at your desk, and the desktop is there — with a cloudy island in the corner, a bright smear, or a brown tide line that looks painted behind the glass. Wiping does nothing. That mark is not on the coating. It is inside the backlight stack, which is where rain goes when it runs along the hinge or down from the display vents.
A stain inside the backlight is a display job and, if the rain was today, a logic-board job too. Do not heat the lid to evaporate it. Bring it in.
What liquid in the backlight looks like
- A grey or white cloud that sits in one area, often a corner or along the bottom edge.
- A bright blob or a dark puddle that does not match a crack.
- A tea-coloured or brown edge after the water has started to dry.
- A mark that shifts a little when you slowly tilt a freshly wet lid, then stops shifting once it dries.
- An image that is still sharp inside the mark. The pixels are alive. The light behind them is not uniform.
Three checks before you assume the whole screen is dead
Do these with the Mac already on only if it has been dry for a while. If the bag is still wet, shut down and skip to drop-off. More time powered is more time for the board, not a better view of the stain.
1. The wipe test
A clean cloth on the glass does not move an internal stain. If the mark vanishes with a wipe, it was on the surface and you can stop. If it stays, it is between the films or on the LCD.
2. The tilt test
Tilt the lid slowly in room light. A fresh puddle between the sheets can creep. A dried mineral stain stays put. Either result is a reason to come in. Creeping liquid is urgent because it is still mobile. A fixed stain will not “air out” in an air-conditioned room.
3. The hinge test, so we do not confuse it with Flexgate
Open and close the lid a few millimetres. If pink lines, flicker, or the entire backlight appear and disappear with the angle, the display cable is the prime suspect — Flexgate repair. If the cloud stays in the same spot at every angle, treat it as liquid in the backlight sheet until the bench says otherwise.
| What you see | More likely | What we quote after diagnosis |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud, blob, or brown tide line that wiping does not remove | Liquid between backlight films | Display option for that lid, only after you approve |
| Whole panel dark, faint image with a torch, changes with lid angle | Backlight flex / Flexgate | Cable repair when the LCD is healthy, often less than a new panel |
| Spider cracks or a black blotch from a corner impact | Broken LCD | Screen-only or full lid, depending on the shell |
| Stain plus sticky keys, or the Mac was soaked today | Liquid reached more than the display | Board inspection in the same free diagnosis, quoted separately |
What not to do to the lid
- Do not aim a hair dryer, heat gun, or sunlight at the stain. Heat warps films and drives liquid toward the cable.
- Do not press the mark. Pressure cracks the LCD and turns a film stain into a panel replacement.
- Do not peel the display or slide a card behind the glass.
- Do not keep the Mac in clamshell mode “so the heat of the board dries the screen.” That cooks the film and leaves the board damp.
- Do not buy a panel online from the photo. The free diagnosis is what decides cable versus sheet versus full assembly.
If the rain also hit the keyboard, read MacBook liquid damage in Chennai rain before you only chase the stain. A pretty quote for a display, with a corroding board underneath, is how people pay twice.
Published display ranges, after that diagnosis, live on the MacBook display replacement page. Backlight flex work starts from ₹4,500 when the panel itself is healthy. A stained backlight stack is not a cable job.
Bring it in. Diagnosis is free.
The checks above tell you which fault you are probably holding. They do not open the machine, clean under the shields, or price the repair. That happens on the bench at iQube Tech Care, Mount Road.
Diagnosis is free. We tell you what failed and what the repair costs. Repair starts only after you approve the quote. If you say no, you take the device back unrepaired. Nothing is soldered, erased, or swapped before that yes.

Soaked today, stain included: book the liquid-damage diagnosis instead so the board is opened first.
Frequently asked questions
What is a backlight sheet on a MacBook?
Behind the LCD is a stack of thin films that spread light from the backlight LEDs. Rain can sit between those films. You see it as a cloud, a bright blob, or a tea-coloured stain that wiping the glass does not remove.
Will the stain dry out on its own?
Fresh liquid can shift when you tilt the lid. The minerals it leaves do not. Heat makes the mark worse and can push water toward the display cable. Bring it in for a free diagnosis before the stain sets.
Is this the same as Flexgate?
Usually no. Flexgate changes when you move the lid: pink lines, flicker, or the whole backlight going dark at one angle. A water mark stays in one region of the panel and looks like it is inside the glass. We separate the two before quoting.
Do you replace the screen before I agree?
No. Diagnosis is free. If the films are stained, we quote the display option that fits the lid. Repair starts only after you approve. If the board also got wet, that is a second quote, not a surprise add-on.
