Chennai rain gets into a MacBook without anyone spilling a glass. The laptop sleeve on the floor of an auto, the bag on a two-wheeler, the zipper that was “mostly closed” outside a café on Anna Salai — water follows the seam onto the palm rest and into the ports. By the time you are home, the lid looks fine and the keyboard feels only slightly cold.
That is the expensive moment to “just check mail.” Voltage on a damp board is what turns a cleanable monsoon job into a burnt charging circuit.
Shut the MacBook down, unplug it, and bring it to a service centre the same day — even if it still lights up.
What to do before you ride here
- Shut it down completely. Hold the power button until the screen stays black. Sleep is not off.
- Unplug MagSafe or USB-C from the Mac and from the wall. If the cable got wet, bring it and do not use it.
- Open the lid part way and blot. Tent the keyboard downward so water can leave the key wells. Blot ports, speaker holes, and the hinge. Do not shake it.
- Leave every key alone. Testing the keyboard pushes water through the membrane.
- Write down the path. Bag, bike, auto, or a windowsill. Was it on? Was it charging? Any cloudy mark on the screen?
A short diagnosis you can do if it is no longer dripping
If water is still on the keys, skip this and come in. These checks are for a Mac that looks dry and was already turned off.
- Ports. Look, do not plug anything in. Debris or a water line inside USB-C means the charging path needs a bench inspection.
- Keyboard and trackpad. A sticky key, a dead row, or a cursor that jumped before you shut down is liquid on the input cables. Details: keyboard and trackpad after rain.
- Display. Cloudy patches behind the glass are liquid in the backlight films, which is a different job from a black screen. See liquid inside the backlight sheet and a blank display.
- Power. If it already failed to turn on, stop retrying. That path is logic board repair after rain.
Where rain actually travels
The aluminium shell hides a short path from the outside world to the logic board.
- Key wells drain onto the keyboard membrane and the backlight flex.
- The trackpad seam reaches the trackpad cable, which shares connectors near the board.
- USB-C and MagSafe sit directly in front of the charging circuits.
- Speaker grilles and the hinge can carry water onto the display cable and into the backlight stack.
- A closed, powered Mac in a wet sleeve traps humidity against the board all the way to Mount Road.
What not to do because it “still works”
- Do not put it on charge to see if the battery climbs.
- Do not put the sleeve in rice or in front of the AC, hoping the room air dries the inside.
- Do not use a hair dryer on the keyboard or along the hinge.
- Do not open the bottom case. You can smear water across the board and into the battery.
- Do not reinstall macOS. Software does not remove corrosion.
- Do not wait until Monday. Humidity in Chennai does not take the weekend off.
Sugar spills are harsher than rain and use the same first hour: coffee or tea on a MacBook. From T. Nagar the drive is usually 15–25 minutes: what to do first near T. Nagar.
What the free diagnosis looks at
- Where the water entered, and whether the Mac stayed on or on charge.
- Keyboard, trackpad cable, ports, and the logic board, including under the shields.
- Display stains versus a cable fault, so you are not quoted a full panel for a flex issue.
- A price for clean-up, parts, or board work — and a separate price if you need data recovery.
Bring it in. Diagnosis is free.
The checks above tell you which fault you are probably holding. They do not open the machine, clean under the shields, or price the repair. That happens on the bench at iQube Tech Care, Mount Road.
Diagnosis is free. We tell you what failed and what the repair costs. Repair starts only after you approve the quote. If you say no, you take the device back unrepaired. Nothing is soldered, erased, or swapped before that yes.
Walk in all 7 days, 11am–10pm, at F9/F10, 1st floor, Anjuman Shopping Arcade, Anna Salai. Or Book a free liquid-damage diagnosis. Service page: MacBook liquid damage repair.
Frequently asked questions
The MacBook still turns on after the rain. Is the board safe?
Not yet. Rainwater leaves minerals. In Chennai’s humidity those minerals keep corroding under the keyboard and the board shields. A Mac that works tonight can refuse to charge in a few days. Bring it in while it is still a clean-up.
Is rain as bad as coffee?
Coffee and tea leave sugar and milk, which is worse residue. Rain is still enough to short a rail if the Mac stays on, and it still corrodes. Treat both as same-day jobs. The coffee guide is separate.
Is the diagnosis free?
Yes. We open it, show you where the water went, and quote the repair. Work starts only after you approve. If you decline, you take the MacBook back unrepaired.
Will I lose my files?
Not from the diagnosis. If the Mac no longer boots, data recovery is a separate quote and starts only after you approve that too.
