The iPhone in your shirt pocket on a bike down Mount Road does not need a full dunking. Rain down the seam, a wet charging port from a damp table, or a bag that sat in a puddle on the bus floor is enough. It may still unlock tonight. The charging IC and the audio codec do not care that the lock screen looks normal.
If the port, speaker, or camera saw rain, power the iPhone off and do not put it on charge. Bring it in the same day, even if it still rings.
What to do in the first few minutes
- Take it off charge and unplug any cable. A wet port plus a live charger is how charging circuits fail.
- Power it off. Do not keep opening the camera to “see if the blur goes away.”
- Blot the outside. Port, speaker grilles, SIM tray if you already opened it. Do not blow into the port, and do not push tissue inside it.
- Skip rice and heat. Rice dust stays in the grille. A hair dryer pushes water onto the board.
- Note the story. Pocket, bag, or direct rain. Whether it was charging. Whether Face ID failed.
Diagnostic checks you can do without making it worse
Do these only if the phone is already off charge and no longer dripping. If water is still beading on it, skip the list and come in.
1. Look at the charging port
Green or white crust, a damp smell, or a cable that only works at an angle means the port has already started to corrode. Do not scrape it with a pin. That is a bench clean, not a home repair.
2. Play a voice note on loudspeaker
A muffled, crackling, or one-sided speaker after rain is water in the mesh or on the audio path. It can dry and then fail again once humidity returns. Silence on a call, with loudspeaker also dead, is a board-level clue.
3. Open the camera in a bright room
Fog inside the lens, a brown edge, or spots that do not wipe off the glass are behind the lens. Wiping the outside will not clear them. Do not bake the phone in the sun to “steam it out.”
4. Try Face ID once
One failure after a wet TrueDepth area is a symptom to report. Ten retries do not fix a soaked flood illuminator. Write down whether it failed, then leave it.
5. Check the status bar
No Service, greyed-out Wi-Fi, or a phone that restarts when you plug in are monsoon patterns we see with baseband and power-management damage. Stop plugging it in.
| What you found | What it usually means | What we do after a free diagnosis |
|---|---|---|
| Wet or crusted port, charges only at an angle | Port corrosion, sometimes already on the charging IC | Clean and test the port, then quote a board repair only if the IC is gone |
| Muffled earpiece or loudspeaker | Liquid in the mesh, or the audio circuit | Dry and clean first. Quote a speaker or board job only if sound stays dead |
| Fog in the camera | Water behind the lens | Quote a camera repair after we confirm the board still boots |
| No Service or Wi-Fi greyed out | Antenna path or baseband after liquid | Board-level diagnosis before anyone talks about a new phone |
| Will not turn on | Battery, port, or a shorted rail | Free no-power diagnosis. Data options quoted before any erase |
What not to do overnight
- Do not leave it on a charger “so it dries while it charges.”
- Do not put it in rice, a warm oven, or on the bike seat in the sun.
- Do not open the display yourself. The seals and the battery flex are easy to tear, and you can spread the water.
- Do not update or erase iOS to fix a hardware fault.
- Do not keep force-restarting a phone that boot-loops. Each loop is another power cycle on a wet board.

Bring it in. Diagnosis is free.
The checks above tell you which fault you are probably holding. They do not open the machine, clean under the shields, or price the repair. That happens on the bench at iQube Tech Care, Mount Road.
Diagnosis is free. We tell you what failed and what the repair costs. Repair starts only after you approve the quote. If you say no, you take the device back unrepaired. Nothing is soldered, erased, or swapped before that yes.

Frequently asked questions
My iPhone is water resistant. Why did the rain matter?
The seal is tested with clean water in a lab, for a limited time, on a new phone. A worn seal, a dusty Lightning or USB-C port, or rain driven into a shirt pocket is a different event. Resistance is not a promise that this storm was fine.
The phone still works. Should I still bring it in?
Yes if the port was wet, the speaker sounds muffled, the camera fogged, or it got hot. Corrosion shows up as no charging, no service, or a dead phone days later. Diagnosis is free.
Will you start the repair as soon as I hand it over?
No. Diagnosis is free. We explain the fault and the price. Motherboard or charging repair starts only after you approve the quote.
Can photos be saved if it will not turn on?
Often, when the storage is still readable. Say at drop-off if the photos matter more than a working phone. We quote that path before any erase.
