DFU restore is a recovery process used mainly for Apple Silicon and T2 Macs when macOS recovery won’t work (often after a failed update).
When DFU restore is useful
- Mac stuck on Apple logo or boot loop after update
- Recovery won’t load
- Firmware/bridgeOS issues (some models)
Before you try
- DFU restore may erase data depending on the workflow.
- You typically need another Mac, a proper cable, and Apple’s restore tools.
When not to waste time
If the MacBook has liquid damage, no power, or charging instability, fix the hardware first—software restore won’t help.
If you share your model/year and symptoms, we can tell you if DFU restore is worth attempting or if you need diagnosis.
